In December 2006, the Oakland City Council unanimously adopted a Zero Waste Strategic Plan to guide the City’s planning, decision-making, and actions toward achieving the sustainability Goal of Zero Waste by 2020, which the City established in March 2006.
Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Policy
On July 10, 2007, the Oakland City Council adopted an Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) Policy that requires City purchasers to consider environmental attributes along with traditional purchasing factors such as performance, safety, price and local availability, when making purchasing decisions.

In November 2002, over 80% of Oakland voters passed Measure DD, a $198.25 million bond measure. Funded projects include parks, trails, bridges, a recreation center, historic building renovations, land acquisition, and creek restoration.
