Do I have to register to be a volunteer on Creek to Bay Day?
There is no required pre-registration to volunteer on Creek to Bay Day. All sites are open to the public. If you want to go to the site in most need of volunteers, please contact the event coordinator at (510)238-7630 and press option 3 or creektobayprotection@oaklandnet.com. If you are a part of a large community group or organization looking to volunteer we request that you contact us ahead of time so we can ensure that the site at which you plan to volunteer can accommodate a large group.
How do I become a site coordinator?
Site coordinators manage the volunteer efforts at a particular site on Creek to Bay Day as well as assist in recruiting volunteers and distributing outreach materials for the event. They are responsible for picking up and returning the tools from the City of Oakland Environmental Services Division, ensuring all volunteers have signed in and filled out the liability waiver, and completing the project summary after the event is finished.
There is a creek in my neighborhood that I would like to clean on Creek to Bay Day. How do I go about organizing a cleanup at this site?
Please contact the Creek to Bay Day Coordinator at creektobayprotection@oaklandnet.com or (510)238-7630 and press option 3. Only a site on City of Oakland public property is eligible to participate on Creek to Bay Day as a City-sponsored location.
What should I bring/wear on Creek to Bay Day?
It is advised that all volunteers bring water and snacks to the event. Most sites provide refreshments and snacks for volunteers . Volunteers should wear clothes appropriate for gardening – long pants, sturdy closed-toe shoes, sun hat, sunscreen, gardening gloves. Tools and gloves will be provided but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own hand tools and gardening gloves to ensure that there are enough for all participants.
I will not be able to participate in this year’s Creek to Bay Day event. How can I get involved in efforts to clean Oakland’s creeks and improve the health of the watershed?
There are several ways to get involved in Oakland’s Creek to Bay Protection Program. Oakland’s Adopt a Creek program offers volunteer opportunities year round at over a dozen creek sites.
